My son Daniel loves his cricket, and plays for Bedminster CC. In a match last week he came in to bat with things looking very tense – 15 runs needed off the final 2 overs for a win. Having sprinted to the crease with adrenalin pumping, he smashed the first ball for 4. But with 2 balls to go, 3 runs were still needed. To everyone’s delight, especially mine, he wellied the penultimate ball to the boundary to win the match. I was so proud I nearly cried.
I bet Lewis Hamilton’s dad shed a tear or two yesterday when his boy romped to his first ever Formula 1 win, in the Canadian Grand Prix. What an incredible start he’s had to his first season. But the real first prize should go the person who designed the car which crashed at 200 mph. When it finally came to rest after hitting walls, flying through the air and barrel-rolling along the track, all that was left of it was the shell around the driver. A few years ago, it would have been certain death, but thanks to the strength of that shell, all the bloke suffered was a broken ankle. Now that’s progress.
