a rainbow in a truck’s spray
can make things better
in wild wind and rain
ugly and arrogant guests
left us still on top

Unlike Saturday’s game at Leicester, this one remained goalless because of a lack of creativity and scoring opportunities – and, of course, a world class penalty save from the talismanic Adriano Basso, celebrated by the capacity crowd almost as enthusiastically as a goal. There was little argument about the penalty decision, not long before half time, as Sproule fairly blatantly tripped a Watford player who may well have scored.
So, yet again, we shuffled out of the ground muttering consoling thoughts about a point being a point, and a draw being better for us than for third-placed Watford, and how glad we are that we support a team that plays “proper” football, rather than the rather nasty whoosh-and-foul style of which we’ve seen rather too much this season from the likes of Stoke, Palace and Watford. But the fact is, we badly need some goals if we’re going to make it over the finishing line in the top two. Only one of our strikers has scored THIS YEAR (that’s Adebola, who’s got 3 goals, but now seems rather tired and lumbering, bless him), our other handful of goals having come mainly from defenders coming forward for set pieces.
Still, we really mustn’t grumble. We’re still loving it, living the dream, blah blah blah. And West Brom, who sit best placed to dislodge us from our lofty perch, could only manage a draw last night at home to Warthog’s Palarse. As all these draws keep coming for our rivals as well, not only will the league champions probably win with the title with the lowest ever number of points, but it may even be the City. That said, we’re certainly not nailed to our perch, and Saturday’s home game against Plymouth is yet another “must win”. I’m childishly excited already.
